Mycroft’s mention of Sherlock’s dream of being a pirate might sound innocent, but when rewatching Sherlock and paying closer attention to his reaction, it all connects to one of the most traumatic experiences in Sherlock’s (and possibly Mycroft’s too) life.One of the titular hounds whose creation was the largest visual effect made by the series at that point. It’s during this episode that viewers (along with Sherlock and John), learn that Eurus was sent to a mental institution after kidnapping and drowning Redbeard, who in Sherlock’s mind and memories was a dog – however, as the story progresses, it’s revealed that Redbeard wasn’t a dog but Sherlock’s childhood friend, Victor Trevor. The episode, titled “ The Final Problem”, saw Sherlock, Mycroft, and John trying to escape from a complex plan with various riddles and traps made by the third Holmes sibling, Eurus (Sian Brooke), who turned out to be a bigger genius than her brothers and more dangerous than Jim Moriarty (Andrew Scott). Towards the end of the episode, while having a coffee at Speedy’s, Mycroft tells John that Sherlock wanted to be a pirate when he was a child, followed by a loud gust of wind and a nostalgic and worried look on Mycroft’s face – and this is a subtle tease of the Redbeard twist in season 4’s finale.
The episode begins when Mycroft (Gatiss) hires Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) and John (Martin Freeman) to retrieve compromising photos of a minor royal and which are on the camera phone of Irene Adler. Sherlock season 2 begins with “A Scandal in Belgravia”, based on the aforementioned short story “A Scandal in Bohemia”, which introduces Irene Adler (Lara Pulver), who Sherlock refers to as “The Woman”.
